Non-Invasive, Real-Time Insight into Your Pet’s Health

At North Richmond Vet Hospital, we use the SonoScape P50, a high-performance veterinary ultrasound system that delivers exceptional image quality and diagnostic accuracy. This powerful tool allows us to examine your pet’s internal organs in real-time—without the need for invasive surgery.

What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your pet’s body. Unlike X-rays, which are ideal for bone and dense tissue imaging, ultrasound excels at visualising soft tissues like the liver, kidneys, heart, bladder, and more.

Why Choose Ultrasound for Your Pet?

Our ultrasound provides high-definition imaging and advanced features that help us diagnose a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, or weight loss
  • Liver, kidney, or spleen disease
  • Bladder stones or urinary issues
  • Fluid in the abdomen or chest
  • Masses or tumours
  • Pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring

It is also valuable for guided procedures such as:

  • Fine needle aspirates (FNA)
  • Biopsies
  • Fluid drainage

When is Ultrasound Recommended?

Your vet may recommend an ultrasound when your pet:

  • Shows signs of internal discomfort or illness
  • Needs further investigation following abnormal bloodwork or X-rays
  • Is being monitored during pregnancy
  • Has a suspected mass or internal condition

What to Expect During an Ultrasound

Ultrasounds are generally well-tolerated by pets. Most procedures:

  • Are performed while your pet is awake or lightly sedated
  • Require a shaved area on the abdomen or chest for better contact
  • Last 20–45 minutes depending on the area being scanned

In some cases, we may use light sedation to reduce stress and ensure clear imaging.

Integrated Diagnostics for Better Care

Ultrasound plays a critical role in our full-service diagnostic suite, which includes:

  • In-house CT scanning for advanced 3D imaging
  • Digital radiology for bone and structural evaluation
  • Full laboratory testing for bloodwork and pathology
